works lika a charm.

this is what i have in my header (maybe other noobs can use it as a reference)

It depends on what the context is.  If the processor is currently
considering an "xml-node" element, then this will do the job -

<xsl:if test='not(. = "null")'><xsl:value-of select='.'/></xsl:if>
