If that's what's in your input I suppose it can't be helped but the
producer should not be generating an xml element called xml (or
beginning with x m l ) such names are reserved by the XML spec.

white space nodes in the stylesheet are ignored (except in xsl:text)

so

   <xsl:value-of select="@field1"/>
   <xsl:value-of select="@field2"/>

wouldn't generate a newline, but you have

      <xsl:value-of select="@field1"/>,
      <xsl:value-of select="@field2"/>,

so the text node isn't white: it has a comma, a newline and some spaces
so it is kept.

instead do

   <xsl:value-of select="@field1"/>
   <xsl:text>,</xsl:text>
   <xsl:value-of select="@field2"/>
   <xsl:text>,</xsl:text>

Now all the text nodes are white and you can indent to your heart's
content.

David
