The simple answer is recursion: instead of doing apply-templates on the
children of a node, do apply-templates on its parent (but in a special
mode, to avoid infinite loops).

Alternatively,

<xsl:sort select="position()" data-type="number" order="descending"/>

will process a node-set in reverse document order.
