Note the expression you provided copies all element *children* of the context node whose name equals $pName to the result, since "*[name(.) = $pName]" is an abbreviation for the XPath: child::*[name(self::node()) = $pName] If $pName were a node (perhaps from your lookup table) and not a string, you could certainly copy it, though that isn't what you said you wanted to do.
