Saxon offers an alternative, you can split the dynamic evaluation of XPath expressions into two phases, parsing and evaluation: <xsl:variable name="condition" select="saxon:expression($filterstmt)"/> <xsl:copy-of select="DataRow[saxon:eval($condition)]"/> This should be an order of magnitude faster.
