check if string is empty

I have an XML document that may contain nodes with no children

      <node>
      </node>

in the XPath data model that node does contain a child, a text node
consisting of a newline and 6 spaces.

This is a VFAQ, the answers are

test="not(node())"  (tests if really empty)
or
test="not(*)" (tests if no element children)
or
test="string(.)" (tests if string value is empty)
or
test="normalize-space(.)" (tests if string value is just white space)
or
...

David
