You want your variable to be 10 if the condition is true and 5 if the
condition is false. So say that:

  <xsl:variable name="start_x">
    <xsl:choose>
      <xsl:when test="true">10</xsl:when>
      <xsl:otherwise>5</xsl:otherwise>
    </xsl:choose>
  </xsl:variable>

Cheers,

Jeni
