Surely you'd expect italic and bold to be separate fonts wouldn't you?
there is no unicode number for a (text) "italic a" you just use the
normal unicode slot for a and typeset it in a different font.

(Although in the case of Arial, being sans serif there isn't really an
italic but you'd presumably hope to get an oblique version of the font)
