xsl if if
<xsl:variable name="order">
    <xsl:choose>
        <xsl:when test="case1">ascending</xsl:when>
        <xsl:otherwise>descending</xsl:when>
    </xsl:choose>
</xsl:variable>

<xsl:apply-templates>
    <xsl:sort order="{$order}" select="descendant::*[name() =
translate($sortering,'HL','hl')]"/>
</xsl:apply-templates>

Do you really want '//'? It's better to specify the path more explicitely.

And isn't it possible to put the element-names in $sortering, so you
wouldn't need translate()?

Joerg
