> But I want each defined template, i.e. those for > head, para, section, whatever to automatically call the named > template which would then examine the current element for > recognised formatting attributes and then apply these to the > output. yes but when do you want that to happen? template currently looks like <xsl:template match="header"> <h1> ... or <xsl:template match="header"> <fo:block> ... or whatever else it's doing, don't you want your automatic named template to come somewhere in the ... so that it can add attributes to whichever element's been opened? unless the automatic action always happens first (or last) I don't see how it's supposed to work. It seems a lot easier just to add <xsl:call-template name="foo"/> at whatever point you need it. Even if you get it working and so save 30 characters per template by not having to use this call-template, XSLT is still going to be verbose, so it's not that much of a saving, I think.
