In window 1: var win=window.open('','_new') win.document.write('This is a test') win.document.close() win.focus() You can continue to work with the second window using the "win" variable (must make it a global variable, of course). If you want the second window to initiate anything in the first window, you need to use a reference to the first window, which is available in the "opener" property of the second window.
