Yes you can.  In window 1:

var win=window.open('','_new')
win.document.write('This is a test')
win.document.close()
win.focus()

You can continue to work with the second window using the "win" variable
(must make it a global variable, of course).  If you want the second window
to initiate anything in the first window, you need to use  a reference to
the first window, which is available in the "opener" property of the second
window.
