not if you don't want them.

select="//xx" returns all xx nodes

select=//yy//xx" only returns those xx nodes that are inside a yy

more typically in XSLT 

match="xxx" matches all xxx nodes but
match="yyy/xxx" matches those xxx nodes whose parent is yyy.

So it is easy to make specific slections. Perhaps your question is that
you want to automatically generate the selections from the schema, 
which is also usually possible, perhaps as a two pass system, first
running XSLT over the schema to generate the XPaths, then running the
generated stylesheet over the source document. An example would help
clarify what you are wanting to do....
