RE: Can one <xsl:choose> <xsl:output>?

You can't.

The XSLT 1.1 WD allows the attributes of xsl:output to be AVTs, which solves
the problem in most cases.

You could consider having a secondary output file using xalan:redirect.

Or use setOutputProperty() in the JAXP 1.1 API.
