perl inserting into a string

do you absolutely need a pure XSL solution? Jeni will probably post one
in a minute, but it will look horrible. Life would be much simpler if
you allowed yourself an extension function to a language with regular
expression support, or even just passed the document through perl or sed
or something before giving it to xsl.

If you must then...

1 + string-length(substring-before($string,'x'))

gives the position of the first x.
