However it would appear from your stylesheet (but not your input
document excerpt) that the element element is in the namespace
that you have on the xd: prefix, so

preceding-sibling::element

should be

preceding-sibling::xd:element

		<xsl:attribute name="type">
			<xsl:value-of select="@type" />
		</xsl:attribute>

is longhand for <xsl:copy-of select="@type"/>
