Have you considered using the generate-id() function? See the XSLT spec at:

http://www.w3.org/TR/xslt#function-generate-id

If you want to stick with your scheme, you want to use the concat() function
defined in the XPath specification at

http://www.w3.org/TR/xpath#function-concat
