<td>&lt;xsl:call-template name="example"/&gt;</td>

or

<td>[!CDATA[<xsl:call-template name="example"/>]]</td>

Either way, there will still be some interpretation; i.e. the < and >
characters in the result tree will be serialized as &lt; and &gt; in the
output, regardless of how they appear in the stylesheet.
