I think Mike's solution of generate-id() will give the cross-linking; for
the HTML part of the question, I think we need more clarification on what
you need to know:

Maybe you don't need to, instead using an instruction such as xsl:copy-of
to replicate whatever child nodes appear in the source. But I'm not sure
whether that would address your requirement. Could you clarify exactly what
it is you need to do?

BTW, and FWIW, this is one of those awful subject lines Tony warns us
