xsl plain text table
Not sure if this is not 'visual' but perhaps it will spark an idea. You
can label the content such as:

 1.a: (content for row 1, column a)
 1.b: (content for row 1, column b)

You would probably need something that equates to a 'legend' explaining
the convention?
