element with largest ID

Hello,

Is there easy way to find element with largest 
ID-type attribute. E.g.

<doc>
<version v="1">
...
</version>
<version v="2">
...
</version>
</doc>

I define the attribute as ID in the DTD and increment it
programmatically.
