As a previous poster already replied to you, you need to use
<xsl:copy-of select="$label"/> instead of <xsl:value-of/>.

The XSL FAQ, XSL Jargon Buster (both at http://www.dpawson.co.uk) and
the spec on RTF's (Result Tree Fragments) would also be worth reading.
