I was just about to start sketching out a solution but then I noticed
you wrote:

<xsl:when test="@id[. $eq$ '']">-</xsl:when>


$eq$ isn't XSLT. If you are using IE5 _please_ say so as it would
be a waste of effort to give an XSLT solution if you want one for IE
(and vice versa)
