But your posting had (by the time it reached me)

Content-Type: text/plain;
	charset="iso-8859-1"

Thus you were using the latin1 character set in iso-8859-1 (latin 1)
encoding. That single byte isn't a character in utf8. The fact that the
european characters are encoded differently is not the same as saying
that they are not there.
