It is laudable that the XSL designers are aiming to be all-inclusive. However, not providing substring() or the like will make some common publishing things difficult, unless people can suggest good workarounds. Will it be possible to do drop-capitals in chapter headings, for example? Or the initial letter in one font, and the rest of the word in another? If we are to convert our XML to FO's then convert the FO's to TeX or whatever, will it be possible to embed postprocessing hints (or hacks) to do this sort of thing?
