Will stop the element being minimised, won't leave spaces all over your
output and won't incur any processing expense.

Way back at the beginning of this thread, yesterday, I suggested the usual workaround is to put a comment or dummy PI in there ... oh well.


Although, I still think we should have the option when output="xml" to
choose how empty elements are handled, this will do until output="xhtml"
comes along.

Like others, I find myself resisting the idea of extensions that allow us to make a difference where there should be none, just because of a broken processor. If the extension is local to a particular processor, it's merely confusing. If the extension is mandated by the spec, it muddies everything for all time just to deal with a problem of the moment. ("Don't fix IE, change every XSLT engine instead.") As the twig is bent, so grows the tree.
