The main goal (achieved in trial software at least already, I believe)
is to store documents rather like rows in a database (calling the set
of documents so stored a 'DocBase') and use XML to add to this
DocBase. UOML is the XML. Seems pretty close to what we need
for archiving if the UOML is an open standard. A bit like archiving
database data in either of two formats - as a database binary file or
as compressed SQL text. Here you can choose, it seems to me,
between a binary 'DocBase' file (holding lots of documents like a
database holds records) or (my preference for archiving long term)
as a compressed (or non-compressed even but that would be huge)
XML UOML file. There is IP on the DocBase but the aim is to make the
UOML as open as possible. Even the DocBase isn't too cumbersome
regarding IP I think but folk would need to look into that themselves.
The other thing is - the format of the document is stored as a print-like
(electronic paper) WYSIWYG visual rendering so any kind of doc can
be stored like this perhaps if it is a doc which can be printed. That means
not relying on formatting things in a certain way with a certain app. Data
like UBL, etc should, it seems, be possible to store along with the
document when classed as 'metadata' (hence suitable perhaps for
when various XML artefacts and the like all have to be stored together
for prosperity.

So make this the standard format and build archiving solutions for long
term on top of an open XML standard for prosterity as a legacy to our
successors - maintained through standards organisations, etc.

Seems like a good idea to me :-)
