I wonder if you're familiar with the following document:

XML Schema: Formal Description
http://www.w3.org/TR/xmlschema-formal/

It's not complete, for instance it does nothing with facets, and I don't 
think we ever received enough feedback on it, so there may be errors, 
but it may be a good starting point for what you are trying to do.
