Perhaps what the WHAT people should consider reintroducing a form of SGML short references into HTML? With the difference that schemas rather than DTDs could be used. And performed subsequent to (X)HTML parsing. Years ago I've implemented formula typesetting conversions several times. It is not easy, and people do like to treat formulas as text that can be typed: plain typing is a good input method. The debate about the best format is old...UNIX eqn versus TeX, the various SGML formats, the different ways of doing things in MathML. Even being able to do the equivalent of <formula script="latex-to-mathml.js">a^2/2</formula> might be useful. Where the JavaScript converts the shortform to mathml built into the browser.
