It sounds like you are asking too much of java. I may be wrong, it's powerful in some ways, yes, but rarely powerful and fast at the same time. If you post a link somewhere to an example of the document, I'm sure there are a stack of folks from a stack of companies that might give it a crack and come back with some commercial offers to help out. I could even tell you how fast I can process each of the nodes, and others might even offer to do the same. Otherwise, a very simple thing to do might be to get a local contractor with a fair degree of experience to give assistance. Handling events on nodes in realtime within an xml document is a specialist task at the moment. Either have fun with more tinkering, or try one or more of the above.
