In my application I used JXTA for the underlying transport - JXTA
provides a UUID identifiers for clients, so I used that for
identification purposes. My approach to associating that with the
content was to leave it to the receiving peer - the receiving peer
annotates the received topic map fragment, using the topic map scope
mechanism to scope every assertion with a topic that represents the
source peer.

In presentations on the "layer-cake" architecture of the semweb, I've
seen reference to DigSig + XML Encryption. As has already been pointed
out there are problems in getting PKI out there - though if you look at
groupware tools like Lotus Notes and Groove, a form of PKI underlies the
identity mechanisms of both. For semweb technologies to really become
ubiquitous though this needs to get driven down into the standard
libraries (.NET/JRE/Whatever).

Cheers,

Kal
