Thanks, Dare. Yes, infoset plus the schema contributions, collections, and complex values. As the discussion gets more focused, the applications of XML (eg, transport) are less germane than the theoretical underpinnings. I share the scepticism of scalability, but I note that XML was designed as a web application metalanguage, not a giant central server db app. I also don't consider it a one size fits all solution.
