Editor's Concrete Syntax (ECS[1]) is a version of SGML that, like XML, does not require DTD-awareness of modes in order to parse data, but it allows many more of SGML's minimization techniques. Much SGML that does not use CDATA elements and uses standard delimiters conforms to ECS. It is especially suitable for colouring editors. It can be normalized into XML very readily.
