Came across this patent application today, and thought it might be of interest to folk here, particularly if there's prior art to be highlighted. In short Openly Informatics have filed for a patent on: [[[ RETRIEVAL OF DIGITAL OBJECTS BY REDIRECTION OF CONTROLLED VOCABULARY SEARCHES A controlled vocabulary abstract hyperlink is a variety of hyperlink that is directed to a redirection facility when selected. The hyperlink redirection facility is a redirection facility for directing the controlled vocabulary abstract hyperlink in a modified format to a service provider. The controlled vocabulary abstract hyperlink may be embellished and encapsulated in a "controlled vocabulary abstract hyperlink". The hyperlink redirection facility makes a determination of which service provider to use to service the request associated with the controlled vocabulary abstract hyperlink by examining user preferences, if any. The controlled vocabulary abstract hyperlink is then passed onto a service provider, which translates the request into an appropriate format for a selected service provider that has been identified by the hyperlink redirection facility. The service provider processes the request and returns results to the user. ]]] Basically targeting links at an intermediary service that redirects the user to a final destination, which they may store as a preference. The submission can be seen if you search for Openly AND Informatics here: http://pctgazette.wipo.int/ (The search uses horrendous URLs which I didn't think would survive through email) This has caused a bit of concern for the OpenURL folks who are standardising one implementation of this idea, and Openly are a member of the NISO Committee doing this work (which seems a bit cheeky to me! :) http://www.niso.org/committees/OpenURL/OpenURL-patent.html I wondered whether folk here new of previous examples of this application. I've certainly written up (but not implemented) ideas that overlap with this: http://www.ldodds.com/blog/archives/000018.html#000018 And there are a bunch of others including Make a Shorter Link which have essentially the same architecture. Cheers, L.
