Your best non-SAX option is probably XMLPull (http://www.xmlpull.org). 
The two packaged implementations do not support DTDs, though if you need 
DTD support there's also a link for CVS code to an implementation based 
on Xerces. I haven't tried out the Xerces-based implementation, but use 
the XPP3 one all the time - it's as fast as the fastest SAX2 parsers, 
and for many applications the XMLPull API is much easier to work with 
than SAX.
