miss elliotte
Simon, the markup folks are already outnumbered by the folks who are simply using XML as a general purpose mechanism for exchanging or representing structured data (i.e. people who'd be happy with S-expressions). Developers and content creators that use XML for things like RSS feeds, config files, an exportation format for databases, wire communication language, etc are not using XML as markup and outnumber those who do.

The only difference is now some of those people have decided to influence the directin and future of XML & it's attendant technologies instead of just using it for what they want and ignoring the dream of "SGML on the Web".

I worry about this argument, in large part because I see the number of
people working with Web Services outgrowing the number of people who
care about markup. I'm not sure that "outweighed" is a safe point to
argue from over the long term. The cost of changes to XML 1.0 might be
a better place, but even that cost/benefit seems likely to turn.

I've long hoped that the WS people would fork away from XML and leave
markup folks to do their own cleanup without the pressure of the WS
folks around. I can't see that happening at the moment, and continue to
worry that the weight will shift.

I'm aware that you're not fond of worrying, of course.
