I stand corrected....RFC 2045 (MIME encodings) specifically allow whitespace 
in the Base64 data stream, and it specifies that decoders should ignore such 
whitespace.

I was told by Sun that the reverse was true...figures!  Note that Sun's Web 
Services implementation (JWSDP) currently does not ignore the whitespace 
and thus dies if it is talking to a .NET web service that is sending Base64 
encoded data.
