I would recommend also Winograd and Flores' "Understanding Computers and Cognition" (Addison-Wesley, 1988). Winograd was the AI exper, and Flores was the philosopher; both were able to put together an involved but readable narrative describing the nature of perception and how it influences intelligence. While I don't agree wholly with their conclusions, it's was quite an influence on me and is sitting on my desk at home waiting to be reread Real Soon Now.
