Re: Character Entities: An XML Core WG View

as I said before, Docbook's worked on it, MathML WG's worked on it, HTML
WG's worked on it, the end result is inevitable: three incompatible
sets (despite hundreds of hours spent trying to make them compatible).

If there is to be an offical entity mapping for XML then basically it
has to come from the W3C XML activity. It doesn't mean that the current
members of XML Core have to do the work (I, Norm, Rick have all offered
at various times to try to look at this, and I'm sure others would help
as well if any activity was announced) but unless there is some indication
that the W3C XML activity is interested in promoting such a set (as part
of the core set of XML documents rather than efforts of individuals)
then personally I'm not sure what else I can do that I didn't already do
while working on the entities in MathML.

It seems to me that the W3C XML activity standardising a set of entity
definitions is something that can be done without any impact on XML
versioning. Once there is such a standard mapping some people may
want to open the issue of whether that mapping should be built in
to XML version n+1 or if there should be any new declaration forms, but
that can be a discussion for another day...
