There are some differences and Alexander will write more about them in
a while.

Our goal is to make some of the basic packages of our system available to
more
people, because we already have some request to do this.

Usually the decision for implementing a new engine (XPath, XSLT or other)
comes after a painful experience with somebody's implementations. Even
not free packages don't support all of the necessary functionality.

BTW, I think there are some works about optimizations of XPath queries and
such staff done by academics.
