But you could probably identify from the schema whether it's possible in a valid instance to have an element with an attribute of type ID and a child called "bar" that itself has a child called "baz", couldn't you? It seems like there is still utility, though not a panacea. It could catch a typo like "id('foo')/baz/bar". This sounds cool to me.
