Perhaps, perhaps not.

If you want to use enumerated types then the values have to follow
the same rules as for element names (so no white space).

So maybe you can change the set of allowed values. Otherwise just
declare the attribute to be CDATA, and move any checking of the
allowed values into your application rather than the XML parse.
