BTW: is there anywhere an updated version of the spec including the errata
corrections? Of course this wouldn't be the spec an longer, but would be
helpful, since going through the errata list on every question is a lot of work.

So you would say, that `a b' should be invalid too?
Having a fast look at the spec I think this would be wrong.
Section 3.3.3 says, that attribute-value normalization takes place before
checking of the value. And since "[8] Nmtokens ::= Nmtoken (S Nmtoken)" I
would say, both 'a b' 'a
b' (checked as 'a b' and 'a\nb') are valid.
However I would still prefer to see this as an error in the spec. It does
not make sense to deliver different strings to the application in these cases.
Considering your note on SGML this seems to be another point where the languages
differ.
