We surveyed this at three recent conferences and no one seemed confused
about the distinction.

A book distributor sending orders to a publishing house using XML for data
interchange (B2B integration, e-commerce messaging, etc.). A distributor
might send catalog updates in XML to a retailer (data interchange), and the
retailer renders new HTML pages for a Web site (publishing).
