Dave,
I recently had an idea on this problem but haven't had much time to form an
opinion about it. Anyway, here it is. Comments or flames are welcome.
The idea is to introduce a special attribute to mark elements which can be
attributes: xml:attr.
Here is an example of how it is used.
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<methodCall>
<methodName xml:attr="name">examples.getStateName</methodName>
<params>
<param>
<value><i4 xml:attr="param.value">41</i4></value>
</param>
</params>
</methodCall>
xml:attr attribute marks the element as being an attribute of one of its
ancestor element. There is a constraint that you can not have to more than
one element that maps to same attribute. How to express this in schema is a
definite problem though.
A weird idea but seems very useful at first glance, more for DOM than SAX.
