As of now, I no longer support (the use of) the XML syntax for XCatalogs, because it involves parsing the XCatalog in order to be able to parse the document, and may lead to useless recursions. I think it's more important to get Socat support revved up, and one of my back-burner efforts (any volunteers to take it over? The Java code *almost* works) is a SocatResolver that implements org.xml.sax.EntityResolver.
