I am trying to get Java Functions to work with Stylus 2.0.17 and JDK 1.3. I have been using the WROX XSLT book as a guideline and have been getting the following error:

The XSL Processor Encountered an error:

Java Virtual Machine not found, version before 1.2.2, or failed initialization.

If someone could post an example of how to make this work, I would greatly appreciate it.

Try upgrading to 2.0.20, which has broader JVM compatibility.

How does one upgrade? The installer on the website installs 2.0.17...

Also, I am trying to use Java extensions as if the application uses Xalan. Is this correct? Also, I am assuming that Stylus picks up the system classpath. Is this correct?

The standalone Stylus installation is always the latest; if you installed Stylus with the eXcelon Portal Server, you may have gotten an older version.

You can mostly use Java extensions as if the application were using Xalan, with a few exceptions:

1) Stylus doesn't support extension elements
2) Stylus requires that functions return Object, not String or Integer or int. Stylus will then dynamically determine the type of the returned object.

I need to add a counter in my Xsl StyleSheet.

For the moment, I'm using a java counter with these few lines (without the "<"):

xmlns:lxslt="http://xml.apache.org/xslt"
xmlns:numb="java.mycode.xslCounter"
version="1.0"

lxslt:component prefix="numb" elements="" functions="add get init"
lxslt:script lang="javaclass" src="xelon.client.util.xslCounter"/
/lxslt:component


and I use it with the different functions (add, get and init) like :

xsl:variable name="init" select="numb:init()"/

It doesn't work with Stylus and works with Xalan.
How can I do that to be sure it will work on Xalan AND on Stylus ?

Now my real question :

To use java functions in a stylesheet, do I need some classpath in stylus or what ??? because I have the following error message :
java.lang.noSuchMethodError on the first call of my java function ???

I found the answer to my question, so :
Java functions must return an 'Object' type.

Prototype expected :
public Object myFunction(type1 var1, type2 var2, ...)
