I don't know very much about XML but am willing to learn if I can find a program with the features I want. The company I work for currently does reporting in a pdf format. We are looking for software that could create say 10 separate reports but be able to pull out and view a specific section of all of the reports at once with relative ease. Also, since these reports are somewhat lengthly, would it be possible to put links at the top to specific sections within the body of the report? Can XML do reporting of this nature? If Stylus Studio can do all of this then we would most definitely consider buying it. Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi Rafiq,
XML can do what you are asking, so Stylus Studio can help you building such an infrastructure. But if you need a reporting solution that already has these feature, without requiring any coding, you should search for a database/tool more focused on content management.

Thank you for your reply. If you have any suggestions for other programs I would gladly hear them. The other option we are currently looking at is an SQL database and using the SQL reporting services. My manager would like several options though before actually going ahead, and suggested I look into XML.

I was thinking to create a template for users to type information into, preferably with the tags hidden, and once that is created everything would go very smoothly. As opposed to having to create the document in MS Word/Excel and then have IT import each section and create the final report, the users could easily create the report themselves and IT would have little/no involvement.

How possible/realistic do you think this would be?

Hi Rafiq,
there are several examples in the net on how to create an XML file in the Word 2007 dialect that contains custom tags (that by default are not displayed) that you can later use to extract the data entered by the user.
A good place to start could be http://www.xquery.com/examples/ or http://openxmldeveloper.org/
