I have to convert a extract (flat) file (from a COBOL program) to XML.
I have the schema of the required XML format. How do i go ahead with this conversion.
Can this be done on mainframes our will it have to be using a tool on Open-systems.

As i mentioned earlier, I already have the schema for the required XML file. Howver, i don't think that the above tool is a automated one. Can he have a tool, which gets a cobol flat file as inout and gives an XML output using the schema and preferably running on mainframes.

Hi, Akshat. Yes, you can automate the conversion of COBOL files to XML using one of two methods in Stylus Studio:

First, if you are using Stylus Studio 2006 XML Enterprise Edition, you can use our Adapter API to programmatically call an adapter. You can learn more about that process here:

Second, you can execute a stylesheet from the command line (StylusXslt.exe), invoking an identity transform on the input URL specified as adapter://...

Identity transforms are:
<xsl:template match="/">
<xsl:copy-of select="."/>
</xsl:template>

Regardless of which path you pursue, note that we have tested the COBOL adapter in a few use cases, and we'd be interested to know of any troubles you encounter.

Thanks for the responses. However, I am not yet clear whether your tool can meet my requirements. Hence i am repeating them.

My requirement is to convert a flat file which is being generated on m/f. This file is generated daily and will have to be converted into XML on a daily basis. There should not be any human intervention required once the conversion job has been fired. I hope you have understood my exact requirement now.

I have thought of two possible solutions:
1) I could define the schema outside mainframes and provide the flat file as input to have this converted to XML.

2) The other option is to have schema defined on mainframe such that the process itself creates an XML without any need to convert later.

I also have a few queries:

1) How does the tool handle the Min Occurs = 0 for a field
2) When i provide the schema, does that act as a reference while conversion?

If you are not clear on my requirements then please revert back to me.

Hi, Akshat.

Yes, you can use the Stylus Studio Adapter API to automate the flat file conversion process. Any machine that supports JVM 1.4 or higher is able to run applications developed using the Adapter API.

XML Schema is not considered during the conversion process, but you can likewise validate the XML resulting from the conversion against an XML Schema by invoking a Stylus Studio validation utility from the command line. This is described here:
