Lee HumphriesSubject: SS Crash 4.6 103q: Switching to Preview

I've been trying to produce some basic HTML documentation from a largish (14mg) XML file.
I had switched to text view in the Preview pane then attempted to switch to IE preview mode when Stylus crashed.

Other details:
Using the MSXML 4 processor (SP1)
The complete details had actually not been presented in the text preview pane. It was as if the preview pane had not been refreshed with the results of the transformation.

The log file hints to some trouble inside the IE component... IE does have
some serious scalability issues rendering large documents; that's why in
the next version of Stylus Studio you will find a warning whenever you try
to display a document larger than 2MB in IE...
Have you been able to save the preview result and see how big it actually
is? Have you been able to open it in a separate instance of IE?

Thanks,
Minollo

That will be really handy. It's not often that I do work with files of this size, but it can get really tedious. Could I suggest an option to allow switching off of the IE preview mode in such circumstances, or switching to 'in tree' or 'in text' preview modes.

>Have you been able to save the preview
>result and see how big it actually is?
Yup. Depending on what I'm doing it's anywhere from 12 to 22meg. When I can save it, it does save cleanly, even if I've terminated the MSXSL process in the Windows Task Manager.
PS. Could you please set up the functionality to allow cancellation of a running MSXSL process from within Stylus (even if it is find the thread and terminate it).

>Have you been able to open it in a separate
>instance of IE?
Yup, as long as I've been able to save it first of course.

Doing this work brings me back to a much earlier suggestion of mine, that is, of getting Stylus to offer XSLT profiling.
Here's some further comments on that:
* I've been using MSXML 4 for development simply because it runs a lot faster than Stylus' internal processor for these larger files.
* For basic profiling, simply record how much time is spent in each template, and which template calls to which other template (for a given scenario).
* When profiling, turn off as much of the other debugging features as possible that may impact performance.

Regards, Lee

You will be glad to know that we have started scoping out/defining this
functionality.
We will take into consideration the requirements you are mentioning.

Thanks,
Minollo

Hi Minollo,

While we're on the subject of new functionality, here's something that would be incredibly handy.

When editing corrupted/incomplete XML files it would be extremely useful to have some feature that could just do the minimum necessary to repair the file.

When I've gone and broken processing half-way through I still want to look at the result that I've got so far, and be able to manipulate it. It takes a looooong time to fix things when the XSLT fell over because stack overflow in an infinite loop, and I want to look at the document to establish what I'm not successfully testing for.

Regards, Lee
