Adam Van den HovenSubject: What about Linux?
Author: Adam Van den Hoven

Hey guys!

I have been using Stylus Studio for a while (since the beta days of 3 or so) and I like it a lot.

Right now we are about to begin a major shift from JSPs to JSP + XSLT in our development and I need to find tools for our developers to use. I want to recommend SS since it gives me all the tools I need without a bunch of extra things (XML Spy is next on the list).

I have one problem, certainly not limited to SS. I have a couple of developers who use Linux and would rather die than go back.

Now, I don't expect a native Linux implementation (although that would be nice) my developers would be happy if they could run it using WINE. VMWare is apparently a pig for them to run.

We've run tests and it doesn't seem to work with WINE. At least the installer doesn't run.

It would be very nice if you could look at what it would take to make Stylus Studio run under WINE.

Adam,
WINE compatibility it's something that we have wanted to test for a
while; as soon as 4.5 is out and we have some more time available, we'll
play with it and see if there is anything we can do to make it work.

I'd be interested in that as well.

With Macroslop's new licensing model and XPs scary DRM stuff, I don't know of any IT development company or major enterprise that's willing to go from NT4/2000 to XP. It's company policy here to not install XP.

Sorry if this sets off a flamewar. But there is going to be a very big market for software that comfortably runs in current MS OSes and Linux. In other words, something that facilitates transition.

We are in year 2005 now, so I wonder what is the current status of Stylusstudio under Wine?
Are there any additional plans to port it to Linux?

Regards,

Kasimier

Hi Kasimier,
we actually did some work with Wine back in 2002/2003, and did contribute a number of patches in order to support the APIs that Stylus used. And for a short period it was possible to install Stylus and expect it to work without crashing too much. Unfortunately at a certain point Wine authors rewrote the InstallShield support and now the installer just freezes midway.
Anyhow we are costantly monitoring their progresses, and we'll make another integration effort once they stabilize the platform (e.g. they ship version 1.0).

Hope this helps,
Alberto

I have it running under crossover wine (from codeweavers, http://www.codeweavers.com/) version 5.0.1. The StylusStudio version is the XML Enterprise Edition 2006, release 2. It is a demo version and not registered yet as the registration fails (clicking Get Evaluation Key gets an error, "Invalid handle").

I created a new "bottle" and had to install Internet Explorer and the VB6 runtime first. I don't have a java runtime installed which Stylus complains about. Will try installing one of those in the bottle as well but I do know that java has some issues running under wine.

I'm running an up to date Gentoo linux on a Pentium 4 laptop. Kernel is 2.6.16 and glibc is 2.3.6.

Stylus should consider talking to the Codeweavers people about getting the application certified for linux when running with the crossover wine package. I use quite a few windows applications with a lot of success using this supported version of wine.

I am trying to install using Ubuntu 7.04 and Wine 0.9.33. The install appears to be successful but it will not accept activation code.

I receive the message "The activation key you entered is not valid".

When I close the Activation Window Stylus Studio looks like it launches but then I get message "We detected an error communicating with the server. As a result, Stylus Studio has been de-activated. Please enter your activation code again to re-activate Stylus Studio."

And then I am back at the activation screen.

I have a valid activation code, both purchased and trial.

What am I missing?

Hi Rick,
the problem is that Wine doesn't (yet) support the 128-bit encryption
API of Windows, so the validation code treats a valid key as invalid.

Hope this helps,
Alberto

Thanks Alberto for the very rapid reply.

Does a work around exist? Or am I stuck with running XP in a vm?

Rick

Hi Rick,
unfortunately there is no workaround; the only fix would be for Wine
to finish the support for crypt32.

Incidentally, somebody is working on Wine's crypt32;
I'll make sure he knows about this bug.

OK, a patch to implement the missing 1024-bit
encryption is attached at http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9536

The app still isn't responding, though. Could
a Stylus dev try Wine with that patch and take a look?

Dan,
we don't officially support any Linux/Wine combination; we may end up looking at it sooner or later, but that is lower priority than a long list of other things.
